Product Introduction

Car thermal insulation films are becoming more and more popular. For car owners, thermal insulation films enhance privacy while blocking direct sunlight, providing thermal insulation and full of practicality. But do you know the history of automotive thermal insulation films? Do you know that the origin of automotive thermal insulation films is also related to Edison! Today, I will introduce the origin, development, and process history of automotive thermal insulation films to you!

Origin of automobile thermal insulation film

After Edison invented the phonograph in 1888, he turned his attention to developing films. In his research, he found that the darker the color of the film, the more able it is to block and absorb the heat emitted by the electric lamp. As a result, this accidental discovery was gradually adopted by later generations, becoming the foundation and origin of the birth of thermal insulation films.

Development of Automotive Thermal Insulation Film

With the continuous progress of history, automotive thermal insulation films have gone through a total of five periods (or "five generations"):

First Generation: Sun Paper (Tea Paper)

Time: 1930;

Positioning: Thermal insulation film enters the market;

Process: The coating composite process is used;

Features: Used to block strong sunlight, without thermal insulation function;

Introduction: The early sun paper, commonly known as tea paper, was mainly used to block out strong sunlight. This type of film has no thermal insulation effect and is only used for shading light. Like sunglasses, which only change the visual light sensation, the surface of the sunglasses is also very hot. Therefore, this type of product has poor thermal insulation, easy fading, and extremely poor clarity. As people's requirements for thermal insulation increase, tea paper slowly fades out of the market.

Second generation: endothermic film (dye film)

Time: 1960;

Positioning: Thermal insulation film emerged as the times require;

Process: using a dyeing process;

Features: Absorbing infrared rays to achieve thermal insulation, sacrificing clarity (poor clarity), and easy to fade (color fading, thermal insulation function attenuation);

Introduction: Heat-absorbing film, also known as dyeing film, is commonly seen in the market as a deep layer dyeing process. It uses a deep layer dyeing method to add heat absorbing agent to absorb infrared rays in the sun to achieve thermal insulation. Due to its absorption of visible light at the same time, the visible light transmittance is insufficient, and due to the limitations of the dyeing process itself, the clarity is poor. In addition to poor clarity, another major weakness of this type of film is that its thermal insulation function decays quickly and easily fades. After a period of time (perhaps half a year or so), the film fades, no longer insulates, and can blister, seriously affecting the visual appearance. This type of film is particularly suitable for instant heat insulation testing (4S stores will use this feature to deceive customers). Color can be directly observed with the naked eye.

On December 6, 1966, 3M Company of the United States obtained the world's first patent for solar insulation films.

Third generation: metal film

Time: early 1990s;

Positioning: Thermal insulation film flourishes;

Process: vacuum thermal evaporation process;

Features: Adding a metal layer to the film, using reflection to achieve thermal insulation, low clarity, and easy reflection.

Introduction: This type of film was produced in the early 1990s. The vacuum thermal evaporation process is to evaporate the aluminum layer onto the substrate, using reflection to achieve thermal insulation. It marks the official entry of the era of metal films, with relatively durable thermal insulation. However, its weakness lies in its low clarity, which affects visual comfort. Another prominent feature is its high reflection. Aluminum plating film is a very obvious representative. They and dye films have the largest market share.

Main brands in the market: 3M, Leipeng, Johnson&Johnson, Uma film, etc.

Fourth Generation: Modern Metal Film (Modified)

Time: late 1990s;

Positioning: Mature insulation film technology;

Process: Vacuum magnetron sputtering technology;

Features: Sputtering a multi-layer metal layer on the film, using reflective light to achieve thermal insulation, high definition, non reflective, but will interfere with the signal.

The fourth generation vacuum magnetron sputtering technology, which officially entered the market in the late 1990s, has undergone various technological innovations. The magnetron sputtering process uses the most advanced multi-cavity high-speed rotating equipment to uniformly sputter metal particles onto high tension PET substrates using the principles of electric and magnetic fields at high speed and strength, using advanced aerospace alloy materials such as nickel, silver, titanium, gold, and ceramic materials. In addition to excellent metal texture and stable thermal insulation, products produced by the magnetron sputtering process also have clarity, low reflection, and long-lasting color that other processes cannot achieve. Truly high-quality films can achieve high clarity, high insulation, low reflection, and no dyeing at the same time. They are currently the mainstream technology products on the market.

However, the disadvantages of metal film are also obvious. Due to the physical characteristics of the metal itself, the metal film is prone to oxidation and can block signals from wireless communication systems in vehicles such as GPS. Currently, car configurations are generally upgraded, and the disadvantages of attaching metal film to automobiles are obvious, such as DVD navigation systems, electronic dogs, mobile phones, and highway wireless toll collection systems.

Main brands in the market: Northern Lights, Weigu, Dragon Film, and other brands.

Fifth generation: ceramic film (IR film)

Time: 21st century;

Positioning: Advanced thermal insulation film technology;

Process: spectral selection technology;

Features: Sputtering multi-layer nano ceramic layers on the film, using reflective light to achieve thermal insulation, high definition, non reflective, but will interfere with the signal.

The fifth generation of automotive thermal insulation film is a "ceramic film", which is different from traditional films made with metal or dyeing processes. The original ceramic film was internationally known as an "IR film" or "heat absorbing" film, which strongly absorbs infrared and ultraviolet rays through a coating layer containing ITOATO (metal oxide powder). Compared to metal films, it solves oxidation problems and metal layer shielding signal problems, with a service life of more than twice that of metal films, The improved version of nano ceramic film adopts spectral selection technology, with reflection and spectral selection and transmission, truly achieving the nine standards of perfect window film: non oxidation, non fading, non blocking GPS, high thermal insulation, high transmittance, low reflection, durable color, long life, and high explosion-proof performance. Moreover, the construction requirements are relatively high, and a slight carelessness can cause the membrane to burn out and present ceramic cracks or bubbles.

Representative brands in the market include: Dragon Film Ceramic Film, Amber Optical Nano Ceramic Thermal Insulation Film, and Jiashiluo Nano Ceramic Thermal Insulation Film.

In summary, the origin of automotive thermal insulation films originated from a small discovery; After five generations of continuous upgrading and improvement of different processes and technologies, we have achieved the mature technology and excellent performance we see today
