The Peruvian fishing ground, located in the coastal waters of Peru, is formed due to the rising compensation current of the Peruvian cold current. The Peruvian Cold Current, also known as the Humboldt Cold Current, originates in the southern waters of Chile and extends northward to the northern part of Peru. It is one of the strongest cold currents in the world. Due to the strong force of the Peruvian cold current, it caused flooding of the lower seawater in the Peruvian waters, bringing a large amount of nutrients to the surface of the seawater, forming Peruvian fishing grounds.

The fish in Peru's fishing grounds mainly include cod, tuna, sardine and squid. The abundant fishery resources not only meet the seafood needs of Peruvians, but can also be exported in large quantities. Currently, Peruvian seafood is widely exported to countries in South America, bringing high economic benefits to Peru.

In the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, salmon are keystone species, supporting wildlife such as birds, bears and otters. The bodies of salmon represent a transfer of nutrients from the ocean, rich in nitrogen, sulfur, carbon and phosphorus, to the forest ecosystem.

Grizzly bears function as ecosystem engineers, capturing salmon and carrying them into adjacent wooded areas. There they deposit nutrient-rich urine and feces and partially eaten carcasses. Bears are estimated to leave up to half the salmon they harvest on the forest floor, in densities that can reach 4,000 kilograms per hectare, providing as much as 24% of the total nitrogen available to the riparian woodlands. The foliage of spruce trees up to 500 m (1,600 ft) from a stream where grizzlies fish salmon have been found to contain nitrogen originating from fished salmon.
