Fish Farming Tank Aquaculture

Pond aquaculture

1. Pond depth

The depth of a pond should generally not be less than 2 meters, and the suitable depth for fish farming in ponds is 2-3 meters. The general requirement is that the water depth of the fish pond should not be less than 1.5m, and the appropriate water depth is 1.5-2.0m. For incubation ponds and fish fry ponds, the water depth should not be less than 1.0m, and the appropriate water depth is 1.0-1.5m.

2. Pond water quality

The fundamental condition for fish farming is to ensure good water quality and abundant water sources. For the requirements of bottom material, the worst type of pond bottom material is clay, preferably sandy loam or loam.

3. Pond area

The size of the pond should be appropriate. For ease of management, the selected pond area is 3335-6670m2, while the fish seed pond, fry pond, and parent pond, due to their own characteristics, have a smaller area than the pond, generally around 2001-3335m2, which is more suitable.

Other than their temperature sensitivity, tilapia exist in or can adapt to a very wide range of conditions. An extreme example is the Salton Sea, where tilapia introduced when the water was merely brackish now live in salt concentrations so high that other marine fish cannot survive.

Tilapia are also known to be a mouth-breeding species, which means they carry the fertilized eggs and young fish in their mouths for several days after the yolk sac is absorbed.
