At present, there are concentrated catfish in the world that belong to Clarias, but the most recognized one is probably C. galliepinus. This species is named after the Kalip River, which depicts the southern part of South Africa's natural mountain range and is found throughout most of Africa, the Middle East, and northward into Eastern Europe. It is described as having the widest latitude range (approximately 70 degrees) among all freshwater fish. Due to its adaptability, C. gariepinus has been widely introduced into many countries beyond its domestic scope - including Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Cuba, Nepal, the Netherlands, and the Philippines.

Throughout the entire African continent, the edible nature of this fish is no longer a major obstacle to the future growth of the industry, and it has already established a certain consumption base.

Operators of some of the larger hatchery in Nigeria and elsewhere use intensive recycling systems to mass produce high-quality fish species. However, the supply and quality of fish species are still considered constraints for many African countries to expand agricultural activities. Because C. galliepinus kills each other, fish species must be strictly graded during stocking, and graded at least once during their growth period.

Due to its attached respiratory organ, this species is suitable for high-density production in static water tanks (with one to two water changes per week) and circulating systems. The yield of aquaculture through a recycling system can exceed 1000 kilograms per cubic meter per year (with regular partial harvesting).

With the improvement of living standards and the continuous growth of consumer numbers, the African catfish industry is expected to expand significantly in the next decade. As in other regions, an increase in the supply of artificial feed should help drive this growth. However, processing factories may still be far away from this industry in the future, as traditional value chains are still sufficient to provide fresh and smoked products to consumers in rural and urban markets.

The production of African catfish continues to attract investment from within and outside the African continent. A Czech company recently invested in a modern catfish hatchery in Cameroon, and the Tanzanian government signed an agreement with the International Fund for Agricultural Development to support 15 development centers in the country to produce 10 million catfish species annually. Many other projects promoting industrial expansion are underway in many countries.

Another Clarias species, C.batrachus, is widely cultivated in Thailand and surrounding areas. The range of this species is clearly related to closely overlapping C. magur and two possibly undescribed but different species or subspecies, from Bangladesh to Borneo. C. Batrachus may not be as cold tolerant as its African cousin, but it can thrive throughout the tropical regions of Southeast Asia.
